KTF Programs look set to re-commence in the Top End next year with newcomer, Nicky Mayer….
“Hi my name is Nicky Mayer. I am a Regional Development Officer in the Northern Region of the Northern Territory. I have been living in a small mining town “Nhulunbuy” for 18 years with my family. We can only travel by car, the 10 hour drive to Darwin for approximately 6 months of the year. This is dependent on our wet season.
I have been coaching tennis in Gove (Nhulunbuy) for the last 10 years. I am also a centre manager with the Gove Peninsula Tennis Club and we boast a membership of over 450 people. For a population of 4000 to 4500 people, we do ok. Although we are quite isolated we live in a “piece of paradise”. For the most part, we are right on the waters edge of East Arnhem Land.
I service Groote Eylandt, Yirrkala (main land), Elcho Island, through the ITP (Indigenous Tennis Program), but in 2009 I am planning to broaden my delivery to more remote communities in East Arnhem Land with the help of Laynhapuy Home Lands. Working together we are planning to input resources with multipurpose courts and this is where I come in to provide the other necessary equipment, nets, racquets & balls. I will then visit these communities once or twice a year. Once relationships have been built, I will be encouraging the people of the communities to do the OTC course so that they can run their own activities.
This will be an exciting new adventure; one I am looking to get off the ground in 2009”. |
