NEWS - NEWS FROM THE WEST - DECEMBER 2007

Western Australia - Published on December 3‚ 2007
News from the West - December 2007BY LISA CRADDOCK

Daylight saving has arrived and so has the sunshine. The tennis season has begun and all KTF programs are in full swing. Colin Thompson, our Geraldton coach has this to say about what is happening in the Mid West region of W.A.:

GERALDTON GROWS

The Kids Tennis Foundation Program has been increasing once again in Geraldton. Throughout Term 3 and the current Term 4 there has been an increase in one new school participating in the Program.

The new school is Yuna Primary School, which is in a remote town 50 minutes out of Geraldton. As a result of the Program, the school has been a huge success for the community. The Yuna school juniors (above photo) really enjoy their KTF Program with coach Colin Thompson.

Walkaway and Chapman Valley primary schools have also come back on board and with it brought many talented players back into the game for the summer of tennis.

Rangeway and Beachlands primary schools have participated in the KTF Program for some years now and as a result of its success have included more classes to join the Program which has sparked an introduction of tennis to more children within the school.

As of next year Geraldton plans on expanding the KTF Program to more country towns and primary schools within the Midwest region. I greatly look forward to the challenge and getting these schools an opportunity to play this great game.

A PERSONAL TENNIS PROJECT

Recently I received a phone call from a very enthusiastic student from Scotch College. During Year 10 all students at Scotch are required to complete a Personal Project. I have seen past Personal Projects and they take on many shapes and forms, from building sailing boats to photography. Tim Ingles has requested to help KTF in Western Australia for his personal project and we warmly welcome him to the team. I look forward, as his mentor, in helping Tim and in turn, to Tim helping the KTF Program. Tim wrote this piece for our newsletter further explaining his tasks:

"My name is Tim Inglis and I'm in Year 9 at Scotch College. I'm currently 14 and will turn 15 in February 2008. At Scotch College, all year 9 students are required to do a Personal Project, which commences in Term 4, 2007. This is part of the International Baccalaureate (IB). The "Personal Project" is a compulsory part of the IB middle years program. It is an extended inquiry, completed over 12 months, into a subject of my own choice. The Personal Project comprises an inquiry, a process journal, a project report and a final product or outcome. For the process, each student has a Supervisor who is appointed by the school and will assess the Personal Project. I will meet my Supervisor nine times over the next nine months. I also need a Mentor who is an expert in my chosen subject and can help me with part of my process. Lisa Craddock, KTF's W.A. Administrator, has already agreed to support me in this quest.

For my process I have chosen to provide my tennis skills and support to Kids Tennis Foundation W.A. I'm very keen on tennis. I play for my school and at Claremont Lawn Tennis Club. My goals for this project include providing help with coaching to disadvantaged kids in Western Australia, raising money for KTF and helping around when possible, for example, at the KTF booth at the Hopman Cup. I feel inspired by Paul McNamee's goal of trying to give every disadvantaged child in Australia an opportunity to have a go at tennis and I look forward to the year ahead with Kids Tennis Foundation in W.A."
